Kailo Northern Devon

Northern Devon is one of Kailo’s Pioneer Places. This is a large coastal and rural area, spanning the North coast of Devon and rural Torridge. Alongside a beautiful environment and pockets of affluence, there are high levels of poverty, isolation and inequalities. Local leaders and community champions are committed to making Northern Devon a place where all young people can thrive.

One Northern Devon, the One Communities and Devon Integrated Care System for Devon (ISCD – and its constituent partners) are key supporters of Kailo in Northern Devon, alongside a rich network of local schools, youth and community organisations. Together we are working to engage and amplify youth voices.

Over the summer and Autumn of 2022/2023 we formed the Devon Kailo Forum – a group of partners committed to shaping Kailo’s priorities over the coming years. If you are a local organisation, or partnership committed to improving young people’s mental health and wellbeing in North Devon and Torridge, get in touch to join the Forum!

FAQs

What exactly is Kailo?

Kailo is a new programme of research and design that aims to work collaboratively with local communities (including young people, youth organisations, systems leaders and public service partnerships) to understand and address the wider issues that may impact a young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

The main aims of the project are to:

  • Work closely with local partners and build strong relationships that reinforce local efforts to address the wider determinants of mental health issues amongst young people;
  • Help build a deeper and more systemic shared view of the wider determinants of youth mental health, which surface new perspectives, challenges and opportunities;
  • Support work that puts young people at the centre of the process to understand their experience, design new strategies and inform decisions;
  • Collaborate to push forward and validate sustainable systemic approaches, which can continue to play a role in driving transformative change for young people. You can find out more about the approach here.
Is Kailo bringing new money or resources into each area?

Kailo is funded by the UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP). This research grant primarily pays for a programme of research and development. Kailo is not bringing new money to pay for new services or interventions (and our work is focused on addressing the social determinants of young people’s mental health, as opposed to the equally important work of providing much needed treatment or mental health support services). We hope to help local areas plan how they might use existing resources to best effect, and may look to help bring in new money to the local areas if we can.

I’m a young person – how can I get involved?

Absolutely – we’d love to hear from you! There are various ways of getting involved, from a casual chat with one of our friendly young team, to workshops, creative sessions or more in-depth research or design activities.

The best place to start is by dropping Ilse (in Newham) or Katie (in Devon) a message to have an initial chat.

I work for a local organisation, school or agency – how can i get involved?

We’d love to hear from you! There are various ways of getting involved, from a casual chat with one of our friendly team, to workshops, creative sessions or more in-depth research or design activities.

A great opportunity is to join the local Kailo Forum– this is a space where you’ll be invited to get involved, hear what we are learning as we go, and help shape the priorities and future direction of Kailo in your area.

I have been invited to participate in local research (or my child has). Where can I find out more?

A central part of Kailo is talking to young people and those living and working in the local area to better understand what helps and gets in the way of good mental health in your area. This will help us design ways to improve the mental health of young people in the area. We are mainly talking to young people aged 12 and upwards, although we may sometimes talk to younger children in Year 5 or 6 in school, with a teacher as part of their typical schooling.

 We appreciate that talking about mental health and wellbeing may be difficult for some people. Throughout the project, we will always approach this sensitively, in age-appropriate ways and can point the way to sources of support for young people if they need it. Our team is supported and trained by experts in mental health support at the Anna Freud Centre for Children and Families

All information collected is completely confidential – all information will be anonymised and no young person will ever be identifiable in any outputs based on what they’ve shared with us (unless they want to be, and actively consent to this).

In terms of what information is being collected, why, and how it will be used – you can find the Kailo Privacy Statement here. No one has to take part if they don’t want to, and we’ll typically ask young people to provide active informed consent to take part (unless it is not feasible to do so – see Privacy Statement).

Are you planning on working beyond Newham and Northern Devon?

Yes. Newham and Northern Devon are Kailo’s Pioneer Sites meaning we are developing, testing and refining the Kailo approach first  in these areas. We intend on expanding the work into one or two new areas in 2023/24, with the ambition of scaling to make resources available for more communities after that.

 If you are an area interested in getting involved in the future, please contact Thomas.Booker@ucl.ac.uk
