As part of Kailo, we are committed to learning more about the ways in which social determinants affect the mental health and well-being of young people. Over the last year, Kailo welcomed three UCL undergraduate students to the project to help them think about their third year dissertation projects in relation to our ongoing work in Newham.

As part of their work, they looked into how young South-Asian females thought about housing insecurity-related pressures in relation to their mental health, what young people thought about the idea of social capital and well-being, and also how Bangladeshi and Indian parents saw help seeking, stigma, culture and faith, in relation to young people’s mental health.

Their dissertations were selected for inclusion at this year’s UCL MSci and Applied Psychology Showcase, which took place at the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health earlier in the Spring. We were fortunate to record their presentations and are pleased to share their work, here’s what they said:

This has been a wonderful contribution to Kailo’s aims, helping to provide qualitative insights on important issues, which were made more valuable since the young students have strong personal ties to Newham. We hope you find their work as interesting and insightful as we did, and we look forward to support more university student projects over the course Kailo’s programme.
